-Creating Effective Learning Environments: Writing Across the Curriculum
I love the different formats of writing assignments other than the traditional essay like having the students write a blog, press release, twitter post, etc. I also think students will appreciate writing to different audiences like high school students or readers of USA Today. I still an unclear about how much weight to give specific components of the assignments. There were mentions of low-stakes vs. high-stakes, but I would like to know more about how educators assign point values to course activities and assignments. Within assignments, is it more important to focus on the students' efforts in content or of organization of the content? One very valuable tip I learned that I will use in the future is that I will have students peer-review their assgnments to recude the grading burden on me and to allow them to provide each other feedback. This workshop inspired me to create my mentored teaching project assignment where the students had to write a critique of a journal article in the format of a newspaper article.
-Incorporating Technology in the Classroom
I really enjoyed learning about incorporating different online tools like Flickr to effectively teach course material to students whether they are online or in a face-to-face environment. I like the different ways the presenter showed how to give the students feedback and how he encouraged both graded and ungraded assessments of student learning. I still wonder how to make technology approachable to all kinds of learning and not make them feel intimidated. In my courses, I will use various media to teach biological concepts. I like the video-taping lectures with tools like Jing so students can review course material at their own pace. I will also try using discussion forums for students to interact with one another to create more connections among students who may otherwise not interact in the classroom.
-Assessing Student Learning
I learned about formative vs. summative types of assessment in this workshop. I will implement more formative methods of instruction like clicker questions or minute papers to help me keep track of where students might be having trouble. I also learned to ensure that my assessment reflect my priorities for the class. I would like to investigate more types of formative assessment other than clicker questions that can be done during class. To measure an improve how students understand the course material presented to them, I wil linclude more formative assessments especially challenging their current misconceptions and challenging students to think at higher levels like asking them to assign federal funding to certain scientific projects, rather than just simple multiple choice recall type questions.
